Wines of Muscadet, Loire
Extending inland across rolling plains from the mouth of the Loire at Nantes, wine production in the Muscadet region is undergoing a revolution. Historically, neutral wines with searing acidity were wine list staples in the local bistro. Now a band of artisan producers are striving to shake off that image with some outstanding hand-crafted wines. The distinctly marginal Maritime climate can result in delicate whites with racy finesse. The best wines come from the sub-region of Sevre et Maine and are matured "sur lie" (on the lees).
