2006 La Gioia Riecine
Tasting Notes
- Goedhuis, March 2011

- La Gioia is Riecine's Supertuscan which had been made with 10% Merlot but had become 100% Sangiovese in the 2006 vintage. Broad, spicy and fresh, this is another expression of Chianti terroir that is muscular yet refined.
Tuscany
Arguably the most celebrated of all Italian regions for its sun, delicious food and rich wines. Chianti lies at the heart of this centrally located, picturesque and expansive area. Tuscany is also home to Chianti's more powerful cousin, Brunello di Montalcino, illustrious Super Tuscan blends and spicy, exuberant whites.
Riecine
Though Riecine's vineyard area dates from the 12th century when it was owned and managed by a monastery, the estate was not actually founded until 1971 by John Dunkley. Today, the domaine is owned by Gary Baumann and run by Sean O'Callaghan and his best friend, Zolfo, a golden retriever with a penchant for Sangiovese. Classically styled yet produced using modern techniques, Riecine wines are refined and superbly balanced - some of the best examples that we have tasted from the region.
Sangiovese
Named after the blood of Jupiter, sanguis Jovis, Sangiovese is the great Tuscan grape, the mainstay of Chianti, Carmignano and Brunello di Montalcino. In the right hands it can produce wonderful wines that range from the soft and fruity to the serious and complex. It is a grape with relatively high acidity, little sweetness, plenty of tannin and moderate colour and extract. For these reasons it is often blended with other grapes, in recent years most notably with Cabernet Sauvignon (a trend set by the Medici in Carmignano when they ruled over Florence).
