Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, March 2011

A delicious dessert wine, Tamellini's Recioto di Soave is aromatic, layered and utterly delicious. Like Sauternes, it is produced with noble rot but theirs settles in the grapes after they are cut and dried rather than on the outside before harvest. The results are similar though with wonderful notes of honey, mirabelle confiture and even truffle. Absolutely delish.

Soave

Soave produces Italy's second most famous white wine after Pinot Grigio. The region is divided into two distinct zones - Soave, comprising most of the alluvial plains, and Soave Classico, encompassing the higher reaching hillsides. The wine is made mostly (if not entirely) from Garganega, an aromatic, light skinned variety that when grown on poorer, well drained soils with lower yields can create wines with notable flavour and concentration. Though known mostly for its dry whites, a rare dessert wine is also produced called Recioto di Soave that is made from naturally dried grapes.

Fratelli Tamellini

Brothers Gaetano and Piofrancesco Tamellini are the third generation of vineyard growers who boast some of the most brilliant sites in Soave. They began making wine only in 1998 when they were convinced by an exporter to bottle their own exceptional production. Though, they are a young estate, their wines are finely tuned and wonderfully stylish with remarkable character and concentration - telltale signs of true masters at work. They are currently finishing a new chai - an Italianate palace that is gloriously inlaid with cream and terracotta red Venetian marble, a visual feast to even the most discerning eye, which will enable them to create their masterpieces in the most naturally cool and fresh conditions.

Garganega

Notoriously neutral white North Italian variety, most famously used in making Soave. In the heart of the Soave Classico region it does produce vey fine wines - fresh acidity balancing ripe nutty flavours.
