Wine has been made in Italy for more than 40 centuries, although not necessarily in a form that we would recognise or enjoy. The conquering Greeks named Italy Oenotria (land of the vines) and the Etruscans also contributed to the development of an ambitious early wine trade. The Romans embraced the cult of Bacchus, which spread throughout the Roman Empire. Now, outstanding wines are being produced in the classic areas of Piedmont, Tuscany, the Veneto and Friuli, which are justifiably sought after by wine collectors around the world. Other lesser known regions are also starting to raise their game and some stunning wines are emerging from Sicily, Sardinia, Campania, the Marches, Umbria, Lombardy and Trentino.
