Germany is a land of extremes when it comes to grape growing. One of the oldest establised wine areas, it boasts the world's steepest vineyards as well as one of the continental viticultural climates. Though there are a plethora of both white and red grape varieties, Riesling is king on its tremendously mineral soils. Its hardy nature and late ripening character enables it to profit from these extremes by producing intriguing, complex wines of various styles.
The main wine regions are located in the southern end of the country which is considered by many to be the most beautiful. Most of the vineyards follow the picturesque Rhine river - the cool, northerly Saar, the slate-rich and fantastically steep Mosel, the rolling valleys of the Rheingau and Rheinhessen, the craggy, Meditteranean-like hills of the Nahe and temperate Baden where Pinot Noir flows almost as much as its renowned spa waters.
