Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, January 2009

This wonderful Montagny 1er Cru displays sweet, creamy, spicy and minerally stone fruit on the palate. This medium-bodied wine will provide immediate pleasure but will age gracefully for six years. This is a white Burgundy that has been applauded by consumers and critics alike for offering incredible value for its quality.
Jancis Robinson, January 2009, Score: 16.5

Tighter, more laced up than the Rully but a lovely depth of pure citrus fruit. Straightforward but very good and persistent.
Imbibe Magazine, February 2010

Classic lemon meringue nose with vanilla notes. Soft peach stone and apple fruit flavours. Rich mouthfeel with a warm round middle. Good tight acidity and a long ripe finish.

Montagny

Situated to the south of the Côte Chalonnaise in Burgundy, Montagny is an all white wine appellation. The wines have a good balance of body and acidity and the best can be described as "mini-Meursaults". Historically all wines could be classified as Premier Cru if they contained alcohol of 11.5% or higher. Today the vineyards of Montagny are classified similar to other appellations based on their terroir and positioning, with almost two-thirds being eligible for Premier Cru status.

Domaine Jean-Marc Boillot

Like many Burgundian vignerons, the Boillots are a long established and intertwined wine family. Having such deep roots in such a small area can have its advantages and disadvantages. For example, in the case of Jean-Marc whose grandfather was Etienne Sauzet, one may inherit hectares of exceptional vines in some of the most illustrious appellations in the Côte de Beaune. However, explaining your family tree might not be so easy. It seems in his case at least, it is a fair trade off. Jean-Marc embarked upon his life as a vigneron by working first for his family's domaine, Henri Boillot, and then for Olivier Leflaive. In the late 1980s, he began making wine under his own name and in the early 1990s was able to add to his parcel holdings after receiving one-third of Domaine Sauzet's vineyards. This outstanding provenance has ensured a core of superb concentration and complexity in his wines. Today, he owns a total of 10.5 hectares from which he makes both whites and reds. His approachable, fleshy style makes his wines enticing upon release, yet in good vintages, also capable of ageing for many years.

Chardonnay

Undoubtedly the world's most popular white wine grape, Chardonnay is most famous for creating the majority of white Burgundies. It is known for taking on the personality of the climate and soil as well as the style in which it is made. This versatility enables it to wear many masks including still wines from all over the world to sparkling wines in Champagne. It creates crisp, clean, mineral-driven wines in Chablis, exemplary, sumptuous wines in the Cote de Beaune, and palate-filling fruit-bombs, both oaked and otherwise, throughout the New World.
