Tasting Notes
- Goedhuis, February 2009

- We stumbled up Marcel with this 2006 vintage and were just amazed by his wines. The 2007 offers an impressively concentrated palate offering up copious notes of citrus zest, ripe pear, gentle spice and a touch of honey. Its laser-like acidity adds excellent freshness and lift. An impressive Macon that towers above many others.
- Decanter, December 2009, Score: 16.5/20

- A producer who consistently churns out top-notch Chardonnay (the previous vintage was awarded a five-star Decanter Award) this is a complex, attractive wine. It's fleshy, ripe, robustly structured and generous, with a creamy base of dried pineapple, nuts and marzipan, a mineral core, and long finish. From 2009.
Mâcon Loché
Part of the Macon Villages appellation (the third and final hierarchical appellation following Macon and Macon Supérieur) which is able to add its village name to the general area appellation. Shared with Pouilly, Loché is an area of varied and complex soils which in the right hands can produce equally compelling and complex wine.
Domaine Marcel Couturier
Marcel Couturier is a new name to the Macon roster having only commenced producing his own wine for the first time in 2005. A perfectionist at heart, he realised that the potential of his own vines merited more than being sold off to the local co-operative and decided to make his own mark in the region. He produces various appellations, but it was his Macon-Loché that particularly won over our palates. It could give a wine from further north a run for its money. Low yields, exceptional vineyard management and barrel fermentation (since 2006) produce wines that are not only impressive not only in concentration but also complexity. Within a region that is dominated by mediocre co-operatives, it is this type of passion and determination that helps establish the Maconnais as a world class wine region.
Chardonnay
Undoubtedly the world's most popular white wine grape, Chardonnay is most famous for creating the majority of white Burgundies. It is known for taking on the personality of the climate and soil as well as the style in which it is made. This versatility enables it to wear many masks including still wines from all over the world to sparkling wines in Champagne. It creates crisp, clean, mineral-driven wines in Chablis, exemplary, sumptuous wines in the Cote de Beaune, and palate-filling fruit-bombs, both oaked and otherwise, throughout the New World.
