Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, November 09

A delicious Beaujolais that offers notes of crushed strawberries, spice and underlying savoury notes. With notable concentration and complexity, this 07 is really appealing and not obviously Beaujolais. Highly recommended.

Bright purple. Oak-spiced cherry and blueberry on the nose, with strong notes of vanilla and cola; reminds me of a Spanish garnacha. Deep, rich and smoky, with sweet cherry and dark berry preserve flavors and low acidity. No way that I've have guessed this to be a Beaujolais.

Côte de Brouilly

Côte de Brouilly is one of the 10 Beaujolais crus. It is situated around an extinct volcano, the Mont Brouilly, which has a special volcanic, blue-stone soil. It is one of the most powerful crus and exhibits more structure and density than neighbouring Brouilly.

Sarl Potel-Aviron

Potel-Aviron is the coming together of Nicolas Potel and Stéphane Aviron who met at Lycée Viticole in Beaune. Stéphane’s father was a broker and his family had vines in Beaujolais. In search of Beaujolais wines in 1999, Nicolas began discussing with Stéphane the prospect of producing traditionally styled wines, that is those that are vinified with no carbonic maceration and aged in wood. They haven’t looked back since. They make some of the most delicious and sophisticated wines of the region.

Gamay

The principal grape variety of Beaujolais, Gamay's reputation has suffered unfairly as a result of the ghastly boiled sweet and banana flavours of the much-publicised Beaujolais Nouveau. Carfeully tended to control yields, in areas such as Fleurie or Brouilly, and well-handled in the cellar, it can produce absolutely delicious wines - forward and fruity for early-drinking, perfect summer reds.
