2007 Brouilly Lacondemine Domaine des Roches Bleues
Tasting Notes
- Goedhuis, Dec 2008

- Pretty and light to the touch with a juicy palate of freshly crushed raspberries and strawberries. A perfect wine that would beautifully accompany picnics and lighter fare.
Brouilly
At the very southern tip of Burgundy, to the west of Villefranche-sur-Saone, lie the vineyards of Beaujolais. Light years from the illustrious slopes of the Cote d'Or, this is the home of the Gamay grape which thrives on granite soils. The grapes are vinified whole which results in lovely, fresh fruity red wines for early drinking. Brouilly is one of ten crus in the area producing a higher quality of wine than straightforward Beaujolais or Beaujolais villages.
Domaine des Roches Bleues
This charming domaine is owned and run by Dominique and Christiane Lacondemine. Located in the Mont de Brouilly outside of Odénas, their vineyards are planted on some of the hardest soils in France - magna volcanic rock blended with granite. This rock is deep blue in colour, hence the name - Domaine des Roches Bleues. Traditionalists, they work by gravity in order to disturb the wine as little as possible and age the wine in large seasoned foudres. As a result, their wines are pure, focused and mineral - a delight for those who enjoy Beaujolais crus.
Gamay
The principal grape variety of Beaujolais, Gamay's reputation has suffered unfairly as a result of the ghastly boiled sweet and banana flavours of the much-publicised Beaujolais Nouveau. Carfeully tended to control yields, in areas such as Fleurie or Brouilly, and well-handled in the cellar, it can produce absolutely delicious wines - forward and fruity for early-drinking, perfect summer reds.
