No one can claim Burgundy is a simple region. With almost 700 different appellations, each claiming a unique soil-type and terroir, it can be difficult to understand, but it needn’t be impossible. And it is worth making time - more than any other region these are wines of unique complexity and hedonistic pleasure.
The region runs from Dijon to Lyons dividing into the Cote de Nuits, Cote de Beaune (which, combined, are known as the Cote d’Or), Cote Chalonnaise, Maconnais and Beaujolais. However despite the relative simplicity of its grape types, Pinot Noir for reds, Chardonnay (and a smattering of Aligote and Pinot Blanc) for whites, the region’s complicated nomenclature does take a bit of decoding. Essentially within each village there are four possible quality levels, regionale, village, premier cru and grand cru in ascending order. Each vineyard is named but ownership may be divided between many different growers. The key is to know which growers have the best parcels of vineyard – and are also skilled winemakers.
