Tasting Notes
- Goedhuis, April 2009, Score: 89-92

- Plump and plush, yet fresh and uplifting, this 2008 offers an appealing palate of red currant, blackberry and black cherry and fine, ripe tannins. It delivers a lot of pleasure right at the get-go and its overall harmony made this one of the most appealing to taste.
- Robert Parker, April 2009, Score: 89-91

- A forward, luscious wine that should turn out to be outstanding, Talbot's deep ruby/purple-colored 2008 offers plenty of roasted herb, berry fruit, coffee, and soil characteristics in its rich, layered, stunningly opulent and fleshy personality. While it still has plenty of tannin to shed, it is ripe and well-integrated. Give it 2-3 years of bottle age, and drink it over the next 20-25 years. Drink: 2011 - 2026
- Wine Spectator, April 2009, Score: 86-89

- Shows berry jam and dark plum on the nose. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a pretty, fruity finish. Needs a little more concentration.
St Julien
St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. Its wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
Château Talbot
A mark of the significant English influence in Bordeaux, Talbot was named after John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, who fought gallantly but unsuccessfully against the French in Castillon in 1453. For many years, it was a twin to Gruaud Larose which also bore the Cordier label. However, since 1992 Jean Cordier exchanged his shares in Gruaud to take complete control of Talbot. It is now run by his daughter Nancy. Talbot has produced a continuous stream of excellent wines vintage after vintage.
Cab. Sauvignon/ Merlot/ Cab. Franc/ Petit Verdot
Probably the best grape blend in the world? Certainly that favoured by many of the most illustrious names on the left bank in Bordeaux - Chateaux Lafite, Latour, Margaux and Mouton-Rothschild to name a few - and other cult classic from around the world such as Ornellaia, Harlan and Dominus. A spread of grape varieties provides numerous benefits - from a practical perspective a range of ripening dates provides insurance against all but the most prolonged bad weather conditions, while their complimentary characteristics combine to create a whole that is very much greater than the sum of the parts.
