Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, May 2009, Score: 90-93

A big, velvety full-throttle 2008 that reveals copious layers of ripe bramble fruit, damson plums, crushed spice and dark chocolate. Superfine tannins fill out its brooding palate as fresh uplifting acidity carries it through to an incredibly long finish. This was arguably the most concentrated and complex St. Emilion at the UGC tasting.
Robert Parker, April 2009, Score: 95-97

What a worthy rival to the prodigious 2005! This is another superb success from proprietress Christine Valette, but it is distressing to hear that this property may be up for sale. The inky/blue/purple-colored, formidably concentrated 2008 exhibits aromas of smoke, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, roasted coffee, and spice box. Boasting fabulous fruit and purity, a multilayered texture, full body, and prominent, but sweet, well-integrated tannin, this is a tour de force in winemaking from an outstanding and a perfectionist proprietor. Give it 5-6 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following three decades. Drink: 2014 - 2044
Jancis Robinson, April 2009, Score: 16.5

Blackish, purple. Hint of farmyard on the nose. Plummy sweet - very chocolatey and Rollandian. Then rather obvious acidity and rather green tannins on the finish. Tannins very supple. Should deliver pleasure to modernists - eventually.
Wine Spectator, April 2009, Score: 91-94

This is very serious and impressive for the vintage, offering silky tannins and cool, racy fruit, with nutmeg, blackberry and light vanilla character.

St Emilion

South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding this village are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite its popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.

Château Troplong Mondot

Located on a limestone plateau overlooking Pavie, Troplong Mondot has become one of the most sought after châteaux in all of Bordeaux. It has consistently been making quality wines for years. It is this dedication that has set it apart from some of its flashier peers.

Merlot / Cabernet Franc / Cabernet Sauvignon

The three classic Bordeaux grapes in a combination favoured on the Right Bank of the river, where Merlot thrives. It's ripe, soft fruit and texture is well-balanced by the firmer tannins and distinctive currant fruit of the Cabernets. Notable wines made from this blend are Angelus and Vieux Chateau Certan.
