Drinking dates: 2014 - 2022
Tasting Notes
- Goedhuis, May 2006, Score: 88-90+

- Brimming with scents of violets and perfume, this intriguing 2006 is plush and rich with additional flavours of roasted coffee and cocoa beans. Finishes fresh and light. A usual favourite with the Goedhuis clan.
- Robert Parker, February 2009, Score: 91

- A sleeper of the vintage, La Tour Figeac's 2006 (80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc) is a lusciously-styled effort displaying a deep ruby/purple color as well as copious quantities of sweet black cherries, black currants, licorice, toasty oak, and forest floor. The wine is opulent, nearly flamboyant, and hedonistic with the potential to become even more complex over the next 10-15 years. Drink: 2009 - 2024.
- Jancis Robinson, May 2006, Score: 15.5/17

- The wine with the most varied tasting notes so much so that I wonder whether there was something wrong with the second sample too old? 1. Very dark with ruby rim. Full, bright, intense. Very tense and introvert and nervy on the nose. Sweet, voluptuous palate entry. Very opulent gosh what a triumph of texture! Very very fine tannins. This seems all winemaking rather than viticulture but to pleasurable effect. The cashmere effect! This is not fighting the vintage character. Not a very long term wine but so what? 2. Blackish crimson. Not much nose very sweet and not very appetising. A bit dilute and fades on the finish. Astringent and angular. 3. Sweet baked black fruit. Very softly thick tannins. Almost too velvety and thick before a slightly abrupt finish. Lacks sparkle. (JH)
St Emilion
South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding this village are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite its popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
Château la Tour Figeac
Like its Médoc cousin (in name alone), La Tour Figeac was named after a now ghost tower which had dwelled on the premises. The renowned Stéphane Derenoncourt is their consulting oenologist who has helped contribute to this property's reputation - and growing fan base.
Merlot / Cabernet Franc
This blend is favoured by many of the stars of the Right Bank in Bordeaux - Le Pin, Ausone and La Conseillante to name but a few. A potentially outstanding combination of Merlot's rich, ripe texture and soft plummy fruit with Cabernet Franc's firm tannins and crisp red fruit flavours.
