Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, April 2009, Score: 91-93

Plump, fleshy yet focused, the 2008 Grand Puy Lacoste is impressive with its concentration and layers of complexity offering up notes of black and red cherries, roasted coffee and lingering cedar and spice. Opulent yet refined and sculpted. One of our top wines of the vintage. Highly recommended.
Robert Parker, April 2009, Score: 89-91

Not a blockbuster such as the 2005 or 2000, the 2008 Grand Puy Lacoste is an elegant, deep ruby/purple-tinged, pretty Pauillac offering plenty of red and black currant fruit interwoven with touches of spice box and tobacco leaf characteristics. Fresh acidity, medium body, and a pleasant, long finish with excellent depth as well as ripeness suggest it will be a delicate, finesse styled offering to enjoy over the next 10-15 years.
Neal Martin, April 2009, Score: 92-94

This has a lovely, far more expressive nose than I expected with black cherries, a touch of iodine and violets (redolent of the superlative 2006) with superb definition. Just a faint hint of oyster shells. The palate is full-bodied, fully ripe tannins, a little more rounded than usual but superb depth, a wine that really caresses the palate. Blackberry, a touch of briary and cedar with a dash of vanillary new oak towards the finish. Superb length. Up there with Pichon Lalande. This is a more feminine GPL compared to other vintages, but one imbued with great breeding. Excellent.
Wine Spectator, April 2009, Score: 87-90

Offers cassis and dried raisin on the nose, with hints of flowers. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a clean finish. I would like to see a little more fruit in this.

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Its renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, the wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Grand Puy Lacoste sits on top of one of the steepest slopes in Pauillac, a whole 16 metres above the main flatlands! Hardly Himalayan, but the extra 16 metres of pebble-enriched soil results in particularly excellent drainage. François-Xavier Borie is at the helm of this very impressive château which was purchased in 1978 from Monsieur Dupin.

Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot / Cabernet Franc

One of the most widely-found blends used throughout the Bordeaux region - including such legendary wines as Chateaux Haut-Brion, Cos d'Estournel, Ducru Beaucaillou and Leoville-Barton. At it's best this potentially perfect combination balances depth of flavour, ripe richness and taut tannic structure and length. It also produces some of the finest red wines from the Napa Valley in California and Stellenbosch in South Africa.
