Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, April 2009, Score: 89-91

A fine, quintessential Pauillac that delivers a full-bodied palate of cassis, red cherry and cedar spice. Round and fleshy, yet focused and fresh, it is a well-balanced wine that will not disappoint Batailley fans. A good value 2008.
Robert Parker, April 2009, Score: 90-92

The 2008, which was harvested between October 2-15, is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It exhibits Batailley's well-known tannic profile, but the high level of polyphenols in this vintage equates to sweet tannins and no astringency whatsoever. A deep purple color is followed by sweet aromas of creme de cassis, forest floor, damp earth, licorice, and a subtle hint of wood. Part of the Batailley vineyard is only 800 meters from the St.-Julien border, but this is a classic Pauillac. The 2008 should be drinkable in 4-5 years, and last for 25-30. Drink: 2013 - 2043

Wood spice, earth, black currant and sweet cherry characteristics are found in this elegant, medium to full-bodied, surprisingly rich, well-textured effort. From the bottle, it confirms the high quality I noted two years ago from barrel. More forward than usual for Batailley, it is a dark plum-hued wine that requires 2-4 years of bottle age, but should easily last 15+ years. Drink: 2013 - 2028

Dense, complex crimson. Interesting, putty nose. Lots of intrigue here. Plush, broad, complex flavours already. Very lively. Sweet though more acid than tannin in evidence.

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Its renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, the wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.

Château Batailley

Known as one of the "forgotten" château of the Médoc, Batailley is also one with great potential. Owned by the Castéja's, it has been managed by Borie-Manoux, a leading Bordelais négociant, since the 1960s. For many years it was not traded amongst traditional Bordeaux circles which contributed to its lesser known stature. This has changed only over the past couple of years. For some time now, Batailley has represented one of the best values in Bordeaux.Traditional and stylish, it often embodies the quintessential Pauillac spirit offering distinguished aromas of cedar box, and cassis enveloped in a finely structured yet fresh palate.

Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot / Cabernet Franc

One of the most widely-found blends used throughout the Bordeaux region - including such legendary wines as Chateaux Haut-Brion, Cos d'Estournel, Ducru Beaucaillou and Leoville-Barton. At it's best this potentially perfect combination balances depth of flavour, ripe richness and taut tannic structure and length. It also produces some of the finest red wines from the Napa Valley in California and Stellenbosch in South Africa.
