Bordeaux, arguably the greatest wine producing region in the world, is made up of three principal regions. The Left Bank, to the west of the Gironde estuary, also known as the Medoc, is home to the classics communes of St Estephe, Pauillac, St Julien and Margaux. Here Cabernet Sauvignon dominates, although it is usually blended with Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
The Right Bank, on the land immediately to the north of the Dordogne, is dominated by two appellations, St Emilion and Pomerol. Here the Merlot is King although many of the very best wines contain significant quantities of Cabernet Franc. The Graves lies immediately to the south of Bordeaux. Its two greatest Chateaux, Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion are located in the city’s suburbs.
To the south of Bordeaux, the misty riverside vineyards of Barsac and Sauternes produce some of the world’s greatest sweet wines. Chateaux like Yquem, Climens, Rieussec and Suduiraud are famous the world over.
