Burgenland
Burgenland is Austria's eastern most region comprising the sub regions of Neusiedlersee, Neusiedlersee-Hügelland, Mittelburgenland, and Südburgenland. It is the hottest and driest Austrian wine region and is most famous for its sweet botrytized wines. It is over the lake in Neusiedlersee that autumn mists form, helping to promote noble rot and guaranteeing a substantial proportion of Prädikatswein each year. These sweet wines are among some of the longest-lived in the world producing wines with great intensity and honeyed notes. The Mittelburgenland and Südburgenland are Austria's most important wine areas, with black grape varieties making up 75% of vines planted, chiefly the local Blaufränksich, Zweigelt, and St-Laurent grapes. Wines from these regions are generally fruity, medium-bodied with medium tannins. Südburgenland is further south and so the wines are lighter in style than Mittleburgenland and the high content of iron in the soil gives the wines a distinct spiciness.
Weingut Velich
Weingut Velich is a small family estate which was originally established in the 1930s. Today the estate is run by third generation brothers Roland and Heinz Velich. The vineyards have recently been expanded from 3 to 10 hectares with the addition of a new winery. Most of the Chardonnay is planted on loam and gravel and sand around Lake Neusiedl. Near the south-eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl lies a wine region called Seewinkel. Seewinkel is dotted with numerous small lakes lying in alkaline depressions. Some of the lakes contain salty water, while others evaporate entirely during hot summer months. In this is the atypical landscape the Velich family produces some of Austria's best dry white and dessert wines. As winemakers, Heinz and Roland share a philosophy of using wild yeasts, natural fermentation in open vats, and both brothers are big proponents of wood cask maturation.
Welshriesling/Pinot Blanc/Bouvier
A unique blend of Welshriesling (a variety that is popular in Central and Eastern Europe and is no relation to standard Riesling), Pinot Blanc found internationally, and Bouvier, an indigeneous variety to Austria. In the right circumstances all three produce high sugar levels resulting in highly perfumed, luscious sweet wines.
