The Australian wine industry has soared over the past 15 years and is now the largest exporter of wine to the UK (although France is fighting back). The development of efficient viticultural and vinification techniques has revolutionised the quality of the wine. Varietal labelling and clever marketing has firmly established "Brand Australia" in the British winebuyer's consciousness.
A veritable lake of reliable, straightforward, fruit-driven, alcoholic wine is produced in heavily irrigated vineyards. However, outstanding wine is being made all across the country. Spectacular Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and red Bordeaux varietals from Margaret River, powerful, spicy Shiraz from the Barossa Valley and classic Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra's terra rossa soil, to name but a few. This focus on quality and regional identity ensures that some exceptional wines will always be produced.
