South America is the most important wine producing area after Europe and has been significantly influenced by Europeans over the centuries - not necessarily a good thing for the indigenous population but probably beneficial to wine production. Argentina is by far the largest wine producer, followed by Brazil and Chile. However, in export terms Chile has taken the lead.
Chile's geographical isolation means that their vineyards are free from the devastating aphid phylloxera. Water from the melting snows of the Andes is used to irrigate the vines. They have had considerable success with internationally recognised varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay as well Carmenere. The wines are clean, fruit-driven and increasingly quality-focussed.
Argentina’s wine region has expanded rapidly since the mid 1990’s. The intense full bodied reds, principally from Malbec, and some whites, including the aromatic Torrontel, became familiar and then admired by the export market. The quality of wine is continuing to increase putting pressure on its Chilean rivals.
