  • Goedhuis, September 2023

Kumeu River’s 2022 Village Chardonnay is a bright crisp and fresh, offering up lemon balm and nectarine alongside fragrant white flowers. This shows a beautiful tautness on the palate with plenty of zesty fruit and flinty, mineral undertones, leading onto a pleasing salty finish. Mouthwatering, charming and astoundingly good value. The ultimate crowd pleaser and a bottle we reach for time and time again.

  • Vinous, September 2023

The 2022 Kumeu Village Chardonnay is a tender and seamless white that flows easily before tying up rather neatly as it reaches its conclusion. It's like an old friend has just opened their door and welcomed you with arms open before they shut the door, with you safely inside. You can expect honeydew melon, pear and even a saline note. It is rather smart on the medium length finish, its components tying up the wine neatly with a flourish. Clean, precise and lively. Drink 2023-2026.

Producer

Kumeu River

Kumeu River is one of the longest established and most recognised producers in New Zealand. Founded in 1944 by Mick Brajkovich, a Croatian immigrant, the estate was one of the early pioneers in Auckland that helped establish the country as an excellent wine producing area. Today, second and third generations work the 30 hectares of vines planted on clay and limestone soils. Winemaker Michael Brajkovich, who was also New Zealand’s first Master of Wine, harvests all the grapes by hand and uses traditional Burgundian methods such as barrel fermentation. Kumeu River's Chardonnays have won many accolades the world over. From their entry level Chardonnay to their single vineyard wines, which have been mistaken by top critics for some very smart Meursaults, Chassagnes and Pulignys, they represent fantastic value for money.
