    This comes from a famous, steeply sloping vineyard in the middle section of the Nahe River. Grand Cru classified, Höllenpfad translates to ‘Path to Hell’, most likely a reference to the vertiginous gradient and warm red sandstone soils of this plot. Renowned for producing small, concentrated berries, this wine offers spicy, mineral fruit against a backdrop of gleaming acidity and tightrope tension. Drink 2025-2040+

    The 2022 Riesling Roxheimer Höllenpfad im Mühlberg Grosses Gewächs is from a special, old parcel of 40-year-old Riesling within the stoniest, rockiest parts of the Permian sandstone of the Höllenpfad. A touch of yeast still plays with the ripe apricot fruit that shimmers shyly on the nose. A touch of white pepper later appears. The palate is stony yet rounded, structured by rockiness, with vivid glimmers of lemon oil, concentrated and increasingly zesty. It's pure yet has an increasingly insistent intensity, spraying with ripe lemon zestiness, white pepper and iron oxide. In the end, buffered lemon zest fills the mouth and mind. The 2022 is long, pure, zesty and insistent. Drink 2025-2050.

Dönnhoff is one the best producers in all of Germany and the estate is arguably the most famous outside of the Mosel valley. The family domaine dates from 1750 and is comprised of 28-hectares in the Nahe, a region located southeast of the Mosel. Dönnhoff is one the best producers in all of Germany and the estate is arguably the most famous outside of the Mosel valley. The family domaine dates from 1750 and is comprised of 28-hectares in the Nahe, a region located southeast of the Mosel. Its climate unexpectedly evokes the Mediterranean, and its soils are comparable to the Mosel with the addition of clay, though not as steep. The combination of these 2 elements seems to give the best of both worlds - the focus and minerality of the Mosel as well as the fleshy fruit of Germany's warmer regions. The vines have been passed on from father to son to grandson and now the fourth generation holds the reins. Cornelius Dönnhoff took over from his father Helmut in 2007 after 8 years of training. Cornelius continues his father's natural (and perfectionsit) winemaking philiopshy, producing wines of extraordinary power, concentration and complexity.
