    The new Chanel No 5! A blend of the classic 5 Provencal grape varieties, Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvedre and Tibouren. Onion skin pink colour, a scent of peony, pomegranate and rose petal. This is a deeply structured rosé, with a rewarding creamy texture and characterful flavours of woodland strawberry. Excellent intensity with a combination of minerality and salinity on the finish. A fine summer rosé and perfect accompaniment to shellfish and charcuterie.

    The 2022 Rosé is beautifully textured and expansive, with notable radiant intensity running through a core of red berry and blood orange fruit. Sweet floral and mineral accents bring it all together on the resonant finish. Delicious.

    The rosé harvest started on the same date as the white wine and continued for just shy of a fortnight. It was all over and done with before September kicked off, and like its sibling, this is a beautifully relaxed and enticing wine. I am told that there is considerable interest in the Tibouren variety at Domaine de l’Ile, and we can expect to see this grape play a more active role in the blend as Syrah wains. The final blend in this vintage is a racy 27% Grenache, 26% Cinsault, 22% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre and 5% Tibouren, and the shale and clay soils allow every aromatic element in this quartet of grapes to shine. All of the vines are farmed organically, as you might expect. With little handling involved, aside from excellent vineyard husbandry and sensitive winemaking a given, Pierre explained that the critical decision each year is on what date they pick each parcel of vines. It is safe to say that in 2022 Pierre and his team nailed these decisions! Again a beautiful background of shy saltiness allows the rose petal, rhubarb stalk and melon nuances to shine, and, in common with the white wine, the herbal and forest tones bring even more drama to proceedings. This is my favourite Domaine de L’Ile release to date, and this is solely down to the heavenly texture and seriously impressive length of finish. Apparently, the ‘mistral dew’ played a big part in the success of these 2022s. This is the first time I have heard this expression used, and I urge you to deploy it at every gathering where you serve these fantastic wines (I will be doing so). You will leave your guests stunned and hopefully a little bewildered with your advanced wine terminology and unquestionable Porquerolles expertise.

Domaine de l'Ile

Welcome to the new jewel on the Mediterranean Island of Porquerolles: Domaine de L’Ile. Chanel’s latest project is based in Provence’s prestigious and ever-growing rosé wine market, joining their three great Bordeaux estates, Ch Rauzan Segla, Ch Canon and Ch Berliquet. This is something very special. The island is a national park just off the Côte d’Azur, in sight of the Fort de Brégancon, formerly the French Presidents’ summer residence. A mere four miles long and two miles wide, it is car-free bar that of the local policeman responsible for the 200 islanders! The domaine itself is 30 hectares of organic vineyards thriving on dry, stony, granitic and limestone soils, benefitting from the fresh cooling sea winds and wonderful Mediterranean sunshine. What better conditions could there be for the local grape varieties to excel: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Syrah for the rosé and Rolle for the white?

Côtes de Provence

France's most extensive appellation, the Côtes de Provence stretches from Toulon in the west to near Cannes in the east. The vineyards run from the sun-baked Mediterranean coast up into the Alpine foothills with their cooling influence. Rose wine accounts for four fifths of Côtes de Provence production. Formerly a drink for holidays only, consumption of rose is on the rise in both France and the UK and and the wines are more and more serious. Typically Cinsaut and Grenache are the most popular grape varieties. There is also a renewed focus on producing higher quality red wine by incorporating Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah into the blends, although combined they can only represent 30% of the blend. Plantings of indigenous white varieties are also increasing especially in the coastal areas.
