  • Wine Advocate, July 2023, Score: 97+

The Chardonnays I have tasted so far from the 2022 vintage in Margaret River remind me of the 2014s, in their soft acidity and primal, almost unbound fruit power. Here, the 2022 Kevin John Chardonnay leads with crushed nuts, salted yellow peach, red apple skins, preserved citrus rind, yuzu, green tea and saltbush, before tumbling into the flavors in the mouth. Toffee apple, nuts, curry leaf and saffron. Concentrated, piercing and intense. The acid envelops the tongue and holds it hostage, while the fruit explodes with power. The Gingin clone is on show here. The wine trails to a soft, juicy finish. It is lingering, very good, excellent, even better after a gentle decant and served in a big Burgundy glass. Drink 2023-2027.

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2023, Score: 17

Succulent fruit with gorgeous oak spice on the palate. Sophisticated, oatmeal nose with lots of texture and juiciness. Long, expressive finish. There's lots of dairy complexity, but without slicks of butter. Excellent clarity of fruit on the mid palate – grapefruit, pineapple, melon. Drink 2023-2028.

  • Huon Hooke, April 2023, Score: 94

The mid-yellow colour is not 100% filter-bright (presumably unfiltered), and it has a fluffy baker's yeast bouquet with an edginess that suggests and struggling fermentation, together with creamy, cashew nutty, bready nuances, lemon juice as well, dried pear appearing later. The palate is quite delicate and reserved, youthfully undeveloped and dry, the line seamless and long with a core of sweet fruit followed by distinct tannin which adds a gentle, drying grip. Very good intensity, the palate especially appealing. A powerful chardonnay that dances to its own tune.

This legendary biodynamic winery in the Margaret River is now over 50 years old and is run by Vanya Cullen, who represents the very pinnacle of Australian winemaking prowess. Generations of knowledge ensure the family's philosophy of ‘quality, integrity and sustainability’ is always retained, and this is evident in the outstanding results Vanya is producing. Treating the vineyard as a living system, Vanya uses minimal chemical intervention with the aim of healing the soil and protecting the environment. The grapes are harvested on favourable planetary aspects and pressed in the winery without any additions, reaffirming the idea that nature is perfect as it is. Indeed, leading wine critic Jancis Robinson describes Cullen Estate as “one of Australia’s best producers… producing elegant, biodynamic wines with a distinct personality”. Wilyabrup, a region nicknamed ‘the Pauillac of Margaret River’, is home to impeccable cool climate wines and Vanya Cullen’s Diana Madeline Bordeaux blend is one of the top examples of the region.Read less

Region

Margaret River

Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
