    At 300 metres this steep vineyard close to Corton Charlemagne is the highest in altitude, facing east and containing a high proportion of clay-limestone marl. Claude describes this as the most “aristocratic wine” in their portfolio. Quite a showy style this year, floral rose petal and plum perfume. This is suave and silky in the palate, with flavours of glacé cherry and damson and a long, composed mineral character on the finish.

    The 2022 Corton Clos-du-Roi Grand Cru comes from limestone soils, white marn andsand, essentially a Charlemagne in red. The very expressive boquet lives up to its name; there is real nobility and finesse here, more red than black character with pressed rose petals coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, quite stony in character. It's not austere but has a long sustain on the aftertaste. Drinking Window: 2027-2045.

    Old vines from 1962 which yielded just 26 hl/ha. A bright mid crimson ruby, with a particularly floral nose. The fruit is fine-boned with a pleasing delicacy. Not as obviously complete as the Bressandes, but the detail is fine and fairly persistent, with little wild strawberry notes through to the back. Silky. Important not to search for power here, suggests Claude. This Clos du Roi will need time. Drink from 2032-2040.

    The 2022 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru is a strong performance, delivering aromas of plums, sweet red fruit compote, rose petals, licorice and beetroot, followed by a full-bodied, layered and velvety palate that's rich and concentrated, with a stronger mineral undercurrent than the Corton-Bressandes, concluding with a gently tannic finish.

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
