Goedhuis, March 2024
This south-east facing enclosed vineyard is home to old Viognier vines (55 years+) grown on granitic soils. One third is raised in stainless steel tanks, the other two thirds in oak barrels. It spends 12 months on fine lees with no stirring to retain freshness. This 2022 is redolent of fleshy stone fruits and fresh almonds, with fantastic herbal complexities such as fennel and green tea. So expressive, and with a silky-smooth texture thanks to the clay rich soils of Clos Chanson. It finishes long and mineral, revealing some exotic fruit twists. Drink 2024-2030.

Vinous, October 2023, Score: 93
The medium-bodied 2022 Condrieu Clos Chanson was bottled one week before my visit. Framed by soft acidity, it offers fragrant white peach, pear, quince, banana, spring blossom and apricot aromatics. Concentrated and round, the 2022 ends with drive on the exuberant finish. Drink 2023-2036.

Domaine André Perret
André Perret needs little introduction: he is the master of light-footed, complex Viogniers from the granite soils of Condrieu. The appellation is known for its rich, mouth-coating whites best drunk in their youth, although André’s sophisticated, expressive examples also have the potential to age well in bottle too. The 13 hectare domaine includes 5 hectares in Condrieu and 5 hectares in St Joseph, and his close-knit, peppe...Read more

Region
Condrieu
A white wine appellation, Condrieu is produced uniquely from Viognier to make both dry and sweet examples. Its best vineyards are grown on shards of decomposed mica often lending a pronounced minerality in its wines. Though Condrieu had a famous past, its more recent history has been modest and its bottlings were virtually unknown outside its region until the 1980s and 1990s when aficionados began to discover its unusual balance of intense fruity aromatics with its bone dry palate. In particularly warm vintages, their wines are notably rich and hedonistic.
