  • Burghound, October 2023, Score: 91-94

A more densely fruited nose also somewhat grudgingly offers up its notes of shellfish, mineral reduction and citrus confit. The mouthfeel of the middleweight flavors is a combination of punch and power with fine concentration as the sappy dry extract buffers the firm acid spine shaping the linear, stony and very dry finale. Like several of the wines in the range, this excellent effort could benefit from having better depth but there is so much underlying material that more will almost certainly develop if given a chance. Sweet spot. Drink 2030+

  • Decanter, October 2023, Score: 93

Dating back to 1640, Pinson Frères – now with Laurent's daughter Charlène in charge – is producing exciting and dynamic Chablis. Appealing ripe, pure stone-fruit offset by crisp lime/lemon acidity. Finesse on the palate and a nice stony edge on the finish: a fine example. Could be enjoyed now but has the concentration to age. Drink 2024-2028

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2023, Score: 91-94

White stones on limestone here, in a vineyard planted in 1955. A pale lemon colour with the faintest green reflections. No reduction, just a slightly fleshier white orchard fruit. Significant power, a little liquorice touch, but balanced, and there is a useful thread of acidity through the ample finish. Drink from 2027-2035.

The Pinson family vie with the Droins as one of the oldest in the town, with documents showing their presence back in 1640, while 1880 shows the first records of Louis Pinson selling bottles of their wine under the family label. It is now run by brothers Christophe and Laurent, joined by Laurent’s daughter, Charlène. The family team oversee 12 hectares of vineyards, including 2.5 hectares of Les Clos and 4.75 hectares of Mont de Milieu, from which they make extraordinarily fine and classical Chablis. They like to use oak barrels for maturation, although the influence of new oak is only ever a gentle whisper in the background of their steely wines. Their wines consistently show the raciness and elegance of fine Chablis.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
