Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 89-91
The 2022 Cantemerle has a feisty bouquet with perfumed blueberry and blackberry fruit, showy with an almost sorbet-like character. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and strawberry fruit, licorice and white pepper. It teeters on becoming a little cloying toward the finish and will need a very prudent barrel maturation. Hopefully, it will muster a bit more finesse. 2028-2040

Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 92-94
The finest wine this estate has produced in some time is the 2022 Cantemerle, a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc that bursts from the glass with aromas of sweet blackberries, violets, rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with an enveloping core of sweet, perfumed fruit framed by supple tannin, it concludes with a long, mouthwatering finish. The pH is a very healthy 3.6 this year, and yields were low at 29 hectoliters per hectare.

Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 92-94
For both expression of vintage personality and value for money, look no further than this excellent Fifth Growth. Bright, pure and fresh, with dark cassis Cabernet (70%) characters. It expresses the perfect balance between direct energetic pure blackcurrant fruit and ample volume. The succulent juiciness is underpinned by very refreshing tannins which give longevity and mouthwatering appeal.

Currants, blackberries and hints of bark and forest floor. Medium-bodied with creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Pretty balance to this.

Despite its classic claret spirit, it has an unusual connection to vineyards thousands of miles away. In the early 1980s, much of Cantemerle's Cabernet Franc was changed to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot by top grafting. Mexican viticulturalists, specialists in this field, were flown in from the Napa Valley to carry out the procedure. Quite an extraordinary project for a ‘mere' Haut Médoc.Read less
Region
Haut-Médoc
The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
