  • Goedhuis, April 2023

Former winemaker at the prestigious Meerlust Estate, Chris Williams, runs this small négociant business with friend James Reid, and together they make characterful, brilliantly priced wines from impeccably sourced fruit. We tasted Chris’ 2021 Viognier for the first time on our most recent visit to South Africa and were so impressed by its crystalline purity. Chris says he likes to make linear styles of wine and this Viognier might be the most crisp, refreshing example we have ever tasted. Sourced from a vineyard situated only 6km from the seas, this is so elegant, with a beautiful perfume of juicy peach, apricot and honeysuckle tempered by a mineral steeliness. Finely chiselled, the crisp acidity and tingling minerality make this Viognier stand apart as does the long, saline finish. Drink 2023-2025.

  • Platter's Wine Guide, April 2023, Score: 93

Freshly picked apricots nectarines on aromatic 2021. Plentiful lively fruity acids, juicy flesh, finishing in a mouthwatering fantail. 40% tank ferment to preserve fruit purity; balance older barrels on lees, 8 months. One of SA’s best, perfect match for Asian dishes.

The Foundry

The Foundry is the small-scale négociant business of friends Chris Williams and James Reid. Together the duo makes excellent terroir driven wines thanks to their enviable network of grower-suppliers across the Cape. Chris and James’ labour of love was a hit from day one: the Syrah of their maiden vintage, the 2001, was awarded a five star rating (one of only 17 for the year) in the 2004 John Platter Guide. Chris and James’ labour of love was a hit from day one: the Syrah of their maiden vintage, the 2001, was awarded a five star rating (one of only 17 for the year) in the 2004 John Platter Guide. Today winemaker Chris Williams has stepped down from his day job as cellar master at the prestigious Meerlust Estate to dedicate his full attention to The Foundry. So close is his relationship to Meerlust however that the Foundry wines continue to be vinified and aged at the estate. 2020 brings an exciting change as Chris and James are renovating James’ historic Voor Paardeberg farm, the future permanent home of The Foundry vinifications.Read less

Region

Stellenbosch

An important region in South Africa, named after the beautiful town at its centre, it is the hub of viticultural activity and learning in the country. Only slightly warmer than Bordeaux, this is an ideal climate for grape growing, and produces many impressive Bordeaux blends, as well as Chenin Blancs.
