  • Goedhuis, January 2023

Savigny’s last Premier Cru before arriving at the slopes of Beaune. This is a deep and powerful Pinot style, with Morello cherry, fresh coffee bean and Moroccan spice. Full of rich and sweet flavours, the line of fresh acidity keeps the wine beautifully alive and perfectly balanced.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 88-90

Mid crimson purple. The nose has a crushed raspberry feel to it, but a little more finesse than the Santenay trio perhaps. Kicks on very well to make an attractive, fine boned Savigny from a terroir which can be rustic but in this case is not. Justin thinks Peuillets may prefer the cooler and damper years. Drink from 2025-2029.

Producer

Domaine Justin Girardin

The Girardin family have been establish vignerons in Burgundy for centuries. Justin Girardin has recently taken up the reins from father Jacques (brother of famous négociant Vincent Girardin) at the family’s 17 hectare domaine. Their holdings stretch from Santenay to Savigny lès Beaune, through Chassagne Montrachet and Pommard. The estate follows organic practices, although it is not certified. Justin is a modest young man with an endearingly quiet approach to wine – he gingerly crafts the wines in the vineyard, and makes minimal interventions in the cellar. As a result his range of Santenays are a fascinating portrait of one of the Côte D’Or’s lesser known villages, and well worth exploring. It is so exciting to discover a domaine following the transition from one generation to the next, when ambition and quality are on the up. Justin’s wines offer excellent value with no compromise in quality.

Region

Savigny-lès-Beaune

The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
