Brothers Jean-Michel and Fréderic Vache make some of the most delicious Gigondas and Vacqueryas wines we know from their 20 hectares of vines. This 2021 Gigondas is a Grenache-based blend coming from vines situated at 600 metres altitude on the terraced slopes of the stunning Dentelles de Montmirail. Matured in a combination of stainless steel and concrete tanks, the focus here is on crystalline fruit. Bright red cherry, raspberry, and blueberry are mixed with delicious splashes of fragrant lilies, violets, garrigue and spice. Finely honed thanks to a racy acidity and soft, pliant tannins that give pleasing structure. A trailing finish of spiced red fruit. As Josh Raynolds at Vinous rightly points out, it “delivers excellent value”.

Bright violet color. The fragrant and incisive nose displays vibrant red fruit, floral and spice qualities. Shows very good energy and detail on the palate, offering nervy bitter cherry and redcurrant flavors and a hint of garrigue. Closes long and spicy, with resonating fruit and floral notes.

Region

Gigondas

An area for red and rosé wines Gigondas has been an appellation in its own right since 1971. Though they can occasionally be more rustic, the reds are often considered a miniature version of Châteauneuf du Pape. Part of this may have to do with the same limited yield restrictions and minimum alcoholic strength (12.5 %), but they also share some of the same varieties including Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Certain bottlings can be approached shortly after release, but many benefit from several years of cellaring. Like Châteauneuf du Pâpe, aged bottles of Gigondas take on appealing gamey and forest floor aromatics which make them particularly enjoyable with roast meats.
