Goedhuis, December 2022
The jewel in Tortochot’s crown: almost 0.5 hectares of Gevrey’s greatest Grand Cru. Sadly just three casks this year, instead of the normal seven. Bright scarlet colour, aromas of strawberries and cream. The higher proportion of whole bunch (30%) in comparison to the other cuvées this vintage, gives a sensation of wild alpine fruits and a feeling of mouth-watering salinity. Perfectly integrated tannins provide both firmness and energy. Hugely layered, this will age wonderfully.

The Tortochot family have been respected vignerons in Gevrey Chambertin since the 19th century, but it is in recent times, under the stewardship of Chantal Tortochot, that key changes have taken place. Previously Chantal Tortochot’s father Gabriel sold most of his fruit to the famous Beaune négociant, Joseph Drouhin. Since taking over in 2001 Chantal has been carefully and surely building the domaine’s name and reputation around the world. In 2008 she made the next step by beginning conversion of her 12 hectares to fully organic practices, which was certifed in 2013. Since 2016 Chantal has incorporated up to 25% whole bunch fermented fruit, allowing the mineral salts imparted by the stems to give a vibrant freshness to her wines.Read less
Region
Chambertin
Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
