  • Goedhuis, December 2022

This great Grand Cru was a favourite of the monks of Cluny in the early days of classification. The Drouhin Laroze 1.5 hectares are particularly important; planted in 1949 they are over 70 years old and produce fruit of exceptional quality and intensity. Cypress tree and pine kernel scent, rich with wild Black Forest fruits. Full bodied and richly layered, this has a beautifully earthy textured character from the iron rich soil of the vineyard. The tannins have an earthy intensity, there is so much going on here and no doubting its Grand Cru status.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 94-96

The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is matured with 20% whole bunches in 80% new oak. Dark berry fruit, bay leaf, Earl Grey and sous-bois unfold on the nose though remain understated. It does not wish to show off. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, beautifully balanced, quite precise with impressive mineralité, especially on the finish. This has real pedigree. Drink 2025-2050.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 92-95

No whole bunches were used in the Clos, which is as usual. Their plot is very well sited in Plante de l’Abbaye and Quartier du Marei Haut. A concentrated mid red purple, with a suggestion of power behind. Red fruit with a darker edge is prolific on the palate, leading through to light tannins at the finish, with a sense of discreet energy. A well-balanced example. Drink from 2027-2034.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Chambertin Clos de Bèze

Gevrey-Chambertin has more Grand Crus than any other appellation in Burgundy. Unusually wines from Clos de Beze may simply call themselves Chambertin, which is an indicator of the quality of these vineyards. One of the most complete of all the Grand Crus, rivalling the revered Romanee-Conti, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze wines are the pinnacle of Pinot Noir - fragrant, powerfully complex and intense.
