Historically the wines of Beaune were some of the most sought after the region produced. For some reason at the end the last century they seemed to lose favour, which is a huge shame. The red wines of Beaune are all about perfume and sensual reward and this is an exquisite example. Brilliant aromas of freshly picked raspberry, it is soft and refined, the tannins are graceful and subtle and the nuanced red fruit flavours linger beautifully in the palate. A delight!

Producer

Laurent Ponsot

Laurent Ponsot is one of Burgundy’s most internationally renowned winemakers. In 2017 he formally left his family domaine in Morey St Denis, and struck out on his own with a new winemaking facility in Gilly-lès- Cîteaux from where he now runs his solo project, started in 2015, full-time. He had been instrumental in Domaine Ponsot’s rise to fame, and had built a reputation as a maverick winemaker with his unique style that combined late harvesting, destemming, and complete aversion to new oak in the cellar. His wines are concentrated and long lived, and have won him admirers the world over. He is a passionate campaigner and prominent activist in the fight against fake wine on the secondary market. Having left his family domaine in the hands of his sisters, Laurent is joined by his son, Clément, at his new project, and together they are continuing to make their hugely exciting wines. Much of the fruit comes from his share of the family vineyards that remained with him after his departure, whilst the new project has given him the opportunity to explore new appellations.

Region

Beaune

The viticultural capital of Burgundy, Beaune was the headquarters to the Duchy in the 13th century and is now home to many winemakers and négociants. The appellation of Beaune includes both reds and white wines, though the quantity of red is significantly greater. The soils are predominantly sandier than either those to the north in Aloxe Corton or those to the south in Volnay or Pommard, producing wines that are supple and early drinking in nature. Similar to other surrounding Côte de Beaune appellations, there are no grand crus, but it does offer 42 premier cru sites, some of which are exceptional. These include Les Grèves, Les Teurons and Les Vignes Franches.
