  • Goedhuis, December 2021

This is a lower-lying village cuvée with vineyards bordering the commune of Santenay. The fruit is 100% destalked, allowing its true Pinot characteristics to shine. Bright crimson colour, this is a very charming style with just 30% new oak. There is a tinge of Moroccan spice and nutmeg, with an attractive tightness on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 88

The 2020 Maranges La Rue de Pierres comes from vines planted in 1987/88 in a steeper vineyard than La Goty. This is 100% de-stemmed, with maceration over 20 days in concrete vats. It has a light, quite floral bouquet, though I suspect that the recent bottling denuded it of the fruité that will emerge with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, fleshy red cherry and strawberry fruit, fine acidity and attractive transparency toward the finish. Just give this 12 months to settle. Vineyards are in Elodie Roy’s blood. She grew up at this 10-hectare domaine developed by her grandfather Robert and father Pierre, in the most southerly appellation of the Côte de Beaune, Maranges. Her eyes light up when she talks about her idyllic childhood enjoying the beauty of her surroundings. After university, realising law and banking were not for her, it wasn’t practical for Elodie to immediately return to the family domaine, so she sought to cut her teeth in wine production elsewhere. She couldn’t have chosen better than 11 years assisting Anne Gros in Vosne Romanée. After such an extraordinary apprenticeship, in 2018 Elodie was eager to return and take over the family estate in her own right. Maranges became an individual appellation in 1988. Historically it was seen as a white wine appellation but in recent years, thanks to a group of highly committed vignerons, it has carefully been building a reputation as a source of fine Pinot Noir.Read less
