Goedhuis, December 2021
The Geantets have a generous 0.45-hectare slice of this great Grand Cru, lying right next to Griotte Chambertin, and this is their flagship wine. Profound aromatics of damson, sloe and tayberry. The initial impression is of great charm, with a sweet, succulent character, but what follows is all power and intent. There is a great breadth, weight and noticeably concentrated dark black fruit flavours and graphite. Grand Cru complexity, profound and persistent.

Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5+
While this is a classier wine than the rest, and it is also a few degrees deeper and longer, it is hard to step up to £1240, given this is twice the price of En Champs. Having said this, if you have deep pockets, this is certainly the finest wine in the line-up, and it has the double-benefit of tasting sensational already but will undoubtedly hold for well over a decade with ease.

Taking its name from founders Edmond Geantet and Bernadette Pansiot back in 1954, this domaine has grown from 7 to 22 hectares under the direction of their son Vincent Geantet and his children Fabien and Emilie. Having outgrown their historical cellars, they invested in a new winery, and their wines show all the advantages that this additional space provides. Traditionally, they de-stem 100% of their fruit and allow the must a few days of cool maceration prior to fermentation starting, which enhances the colour and aromatic content of their wines. Through a combination of old vines (plenty of centenaries in their vineyards), sumptuous fruit concentration and generous new oak they make a hedonistic style of Burgundy.Read less

Charmes Chambertin
Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
