  • Goedhuis, April 2021, Score: 92-94

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot Following on from their brilliant 2019, Caroline Frey and her wine-making team are really on a roll. This is a cracker. A mass of scent exuding aromas of blueberry, violet and freshly picked summer fruits. Polish, harmony and grace immediately spring to mind, all these characters flow through the palate. The dark berry and sprinkling of oriental spice are aided by a soft and rewarding freshness on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 91-93

The 2020 La Lagune offers intense Cabernet scents on the nose, the black fruit, tobacco, humidor and light cedar scents bursting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins that frame the crisp black fruit. This is a classic Médoc with just the right amount of structure and dryness, partnered with assiduous sapidity that gets the saliva flowing. It should gain a little flesh during its élevage. You might call this "proper Claret." Drink 2025 - 2045

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 92-94

The 2020 La Lagune is a real standout. Intense, soaring aromatics give this racy Haut-Médoc tons of allure. Graphite, dried herbs, leather, menthol and licorice explode from the glass. A wine of unreal dimension, pedigree and class, the La Lagune is simply lights out in 2020. Time in the glass brings out gorgeous red/purplish fruit intermingled with sweet floral notes that add striking inner perfume. Drink 2030 - 2050

  • James Suckling, April 2021, Score: 93-94

A firm, polished red with tight, focused tannins that flow across the palate. It’s medium-to full-bodied with good length and a gorgeous finish. From organically grown grapes.

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2021, Score: 18+

This is a stunning La Lagune with sensational energy, grandeur and poise. The fruit is lusty, dark and resonant and the oak adds to this wine’s flair as opposed to masking its promise. The finish is prodigious and the flavour barely falls away as it ticks along. Fabulously classy and laser-sighted to this wine’s precise location, this is a must-buy in 2020, assuming that the pricing is fair. It manages to sum up everything that I both like and respect about this historic property in just one glass.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 16.5

Very dark with purplish rim. Pure left-bank Cabernet aroma that is both intensely cassis but also with a layer of cedar and a hint of stone-dust minerality. A freshness to the aroma without obvious herbaceousness. Super-fine tannins. Pure and fresh on the palate, a hint of dark chocolate and already showing real elegance in the finesse of the dry almost sinewy tannin texture. Lovely young wine without extremes. • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 92-94

Showing a serious depth of color, the wine is filled with floral aromas, espresso, leaves and spicy red fruit aromas. Medium-bodied, elegant, fresh and refined, texturally the wine feels like spun silk. There is good length and purity here. I am really liking the spicy freshness and savor character in the lingering finish.

Producer

Château La Lagune

One of the most popular wines during these campaigns - due to its excellent value. Unlike itsclassified companions, La Lagune is the only third growth that is not from a communal appellation.Comprised of very light sandy-gravelly soils, many believe its wines are similar to those of Pomerol or Graves.

Region

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
