    Badarina is one of Serralunga’s most precious plots. Decanter calls Grimaldi “the reference producer for this vineyard”. At 450m above sea level, it was traditionally reserved for Dolcetto vines, but the forward-thinking Grimaldis planted Nebbiolo; a sage decision in the face of rising temperatures. The wines from Badarina have linear tension and a tell-tale chalkiness. The 2020 is super, offering sumptuous balsamic and angostura bitter complexities to the crystalline red fruit. Sapid and intensely mineral with a taut backbone that gives the wine such racy energy. We can’t get enough!

    The 2020 Badarina from Bruna Grimaldi is fragrant and refined, starting with its lovely aromas of ripe berry, dark spice, camphor and perfumed blue flower. Smooth and already approachable, the full-bodied, elegant palate offers juicy raspberry, blood orange and licorice accompanied by taut, polished tannins. Drink 2026–2032.

Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
