Goedhuis, February 2024
The 2019 Brunello from Canalicchio is other-worldly. A 50/50 split of fruit from the estate’s famous Canalicchio and Montosoli terroirs, its intense nose of rich red and black cherry is tinged with fresh mint and lavender, bitter dark chocolate, dried orange peel, and beautiful balsamic and cinnamon spice. Like silk the palate is supple and tensile, thanks to wonderfully fine-grained tannins wrapped in masses of pure, rich, complex fruit. We love the elegant muscle and piercing freshness that underpins this 2019 and that denote a very long ageing potential. Drink 2029-2040.

Wine Advocate, December 2023, Score: 94
With a hint of candied cherry, grenadine or Shirley Temple, the Canalicchio di Sopra 2019 Brunello di Montalcino reveals purple blossom, dried flower, cough drop and balsam herb. The wine is very nicely stitched together with integrated oak that comes through in a structural way but not too much on the bouquet. The tannins do feel dry on the mid-palate, but they remain fine and tight. Drink 2025-2040.

Vinous, November 2023, Score: 96
Dusty violets, lavender and cloves accentuate dried black cherries as the dramatic 2019 Brunello di Montalcino smolders up from the glass. This is impossible to ignore, bursting with energy as depths of ripe red fruits, chalky minerals and exotic spices saturate all they touch, balanced by textures of pure silk. The 2019 finishes with fantastic length and concentration, leaving a staining of tart blackberry and hints of orange that curl the tongue as crunchy tannins tug at the palate. It's rare to see such a combination of vibrancy and power. Canalicchio di Sopra nailed it in 2019. Wow. Drink 2026-2042.

Kerin O’Keefe, November 2023, Score: 93
New leather, camphor, forest floor and exotic brown spice aromas lead the nose on the robust, savory 2019 Brunello from Canalicchio. This is a big, bold red, delivering liquor-soaked prune, succulent black cherry, licorice and tobacco alongside a backbone of firm, tightly woven tannins. You’ll also feel the warmth of alcohol on the close.

First produced in 1966, the Canalicchio di Sopra winery consists of 19 hectares under vine which lie to the north east of the Montalcino hill at approximately 300 metres altitude. The wineries grapes are grown on two very different terrains here, each with different soil types and exposures that provide different characteristics to the Brunello. The grapes from the more warmly exposed Montosoli site give the Brunello excellent richness, concentration and structure whilst those from Canalicchio provide elegance, minerality and finesse. In 2013 it was deemed necessary, due to the cooler nature of the vintage, that 60% of the grapes came from the warmer Montosoli site to add the perfect balance. One of the original 12 members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello is one of the finest produced in the north east zone of Montalcino.Read less
Region
Montalcino
Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
