The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill is dark and explosive in the glass, with real energy driving the blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, licorice and chocolate flavors. Deep and substantial, the Volcanic Hill offers a striking combination of the virile power this wine is known for but with the slightly soft contours of the year. That's a pretty appealing combination in my book. Drink 2028-2048.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Volcanic Hill is a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12.5% Merlot, 8.7% Malbec and 2.8% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it bursts with vibrant scents of wild blueberries, chocolate-covered cherries and boysenberries with hints of sassafras, fragrant earth, vanilla pod and underbrush, plus a waft of crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers fantastic purity and depth, offering firm, grainy tannins to support the bags of earth-laced black fruits, finishing long and mineral laced. Drink 2025-2050

In one of the estate’s warmest microclimates, the grey, light volcanic ash soils of southfacing Volcanic Hill derive from an eruption some eight million years ago of Mt Konocti to the north. Planted in 1968, the 3ha site ranges from 160m-185m and often produces Diamond Creek’s most powerful and long-lived wine. The 2016 blends 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 12.5% Merlot with Malbec and a little Petit Verdot, aged in 100% new French oak for 21 months. Michelle Cherutti-Kowal MW: Shows a good degree of fruit ripeness on both nose and palate, with the oak adding another layer; tannins very high, needs time. James Doidge MW: Dark and rich, aromas of coffee and vanilla, blackcurrant and blackberry, savoury, spicy finish, minty and herbal, with supple yet grainy tannins. Stefan Neumann MS: Has a lifted, floral character and shows depth of fruit and a wonderful balance of intensity and ripeness. Buy but keep. Drink 2022-2040

In 1968, visionaries Al and Boots Brounstein changed the destiny of Napa Valley wines forever. Ignoring the naysayers and recognising the region’s potential for growing exceptional Single-Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, they ventured to plant Bordeaux varietals while the creditors tried to convince them otherwise. With naught but a borrowed tractor, Al cleared 20 acres of land in the secluded Diamond Mountain AVA, and Diamond Creek was born. Carved out of the mountain, Diamond Creek consists of four distinctly different vineyards – Gravelly Meadow, Lake Vineyard, Red Rock Terrace, and Volcanic Hill – all of which are blessed with a unique microclimate and soil type. While the single vineyard wines are vinified and matured identically, each wine has its own personality, expressing the individuality of the microsites from where they are grown. Napa Valley
This small town north of San Francisco has grown up to be one of California’s most famous wine regions. It is home to opulent Cabernets and sweetly-spiced Zinfandels, grown across many sub-regions including Stags Leap, Rutherford, Oakville and others. Cooling ocean fogs roll in from the Pacific at night and burn off in the summer sunshine, keeping the region cooler than you would expect for its latitude, and help produce some of the best Californian wines. Napa wines have the concentration and structure to age magnificently.
