Goedhuis, November 2018
Amongst a set of very high quality premiers crus, Montée de Tonnerre is probably the finest in the Droin cellar, and often ages the best. The nose has the classic character of sea spray, oyster shell, and fine zesty spritz. It carries its power and complexity lightly. The palate displays succulent apricot and nectarine depth and the final impression is of a charming, delicious, and extremely impressive Chablis.

Neal Martin, August 2018, Score: 92-94
The 2017 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre is matured 25% in used wood. It has a lovely flint and smoked walnut aroma that is all beautifully defined. The marn [or marl?] blue soils are articulated in this Premier Cru with impressive clarity. The palate is well defined with a saline entry, fresh citrus fruit with a squeeze of lime and a brisk, vivacious and lightly spiced note to complete a really lovely Montée de Tonnerre. Drink 2021-2035

Antonio Galloni, January 2020, Score: 95
One of the stand outs in this range, the 2017 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is precise and tightly wound, not to mention unbelievably alluring. Crushed rocks, white pepper flowers and citrus peel are some of the many notes that grace this vivid, captivating Chablis from Droin. Finely cut and crystalline, with precision to burn, the 2017 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre is quite simply what Chablis is all about. Drink 2022-2037

Burghound, October 2018, Score: 89-92
Discreet wood influence frames the floral, citrus and wet stone scents. The exceptionally rich and palate soaking flavors possess moderately muscular yet refined flavors that possess better length on the saline and notably drier finish. Drink: 2023+

It is quite something to be the 14th generation of your family making wines in the same town since 1620. Unsurprisingly over this 400-year period, the Droins have built up a sizeable 26-hectare estate and an enviable portfolio of appellations from both Grands and Premiers Crus within the Chablis region. Benoît joined his father at the estate in 1999 at the age of 24, and for the last decade has assumed total control. During this period, he has continued the family’s respect for their fine terroir and soil but has quietly adjusted the winemaking style. The use of oak is less prevalent today than in his father Jean-Paul’s time, resulting in a greater terroir identity to the domaine’s wines and a mineral drive and edge. At the risk of testing his natural modesty, Benoît is very firmly positioning himself and the estate as one of Chablis’s greats. Regularly achieving top spot in blind tastings, in our view his brilliance is unsurpassed today.Read less
Region
Chablis
Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
