  • Goedhuis, April 2017, Score: 91-93

This is a first for us to offer this wine en primeur, having come across the brilliant 2009 vintage it was vital to seek it out this year, and what a joy it is. Shining purple, full of violets and summer fruit aromas. This is beautifully complete, everything that one expects: balanced, poised, sweet with medium tannic structure and length. Excellent in every way.

  • Neal Martin, April 2017, Score: 91-93

The 2016 Fonreaud is certainly a Listrac that is worth checking out. The bouquet is very well defined with supremely well-integrated oak that allows the terroir to show through. There is a subtle Margaux-like floral scent coming through. The palate is very well balanced with fine tannins and a very good backbone. This Fonreaud is one of the most precise that I have tasted and there is tangible tension all the way through to the refined finish. This Listrac has produced some very fine wines recently and this 2016 could be the best yet. Drink Date 2021 - 2040

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2017, Score: 16

Rather nice and compact with some damson fruit and a neat forward feel. This is an appealing wine and it looks authentic and accurate.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2017, Score: 17

Deep crimson. Rather gorgeously ripe and glossy on the nose. Very sweet black fruits on the palate followed by really quite a charge of ripe tannin. Maybe not the longest-laster, but overall well done! A delicate touch.

Region

Bordeaux

When the Romans first planted a few vines on the limestone outcrops of St Emilion in the early years of the first century, and tasted what was, by all accounts, rather thin, bitter wine, they can hardly have imagined that the region's greatest red wines would become the most sought afterfine wines in the world. From the days in the seventeenth century when the then owners of Ch Haut Brion, the de Pontac family, became the first to export to the UK, selling their wine in their own tavern, the Pontac's Head, red Bordeaux or claret has been the Englishman's favourite. The wines of the 1855 Classification are merely the tip of the iceberg. Bordeaux AC accounts for about half of all wine produced in the area, from vineyards outside the regional or communal appelations and often blended by the negociant houses. Simpler beasts these although still clearly related to their more illustrious cousins - relatively light and fresh, full of fruit, with soft tannins making for delicious, and good value, early drinking.
