  • Goedhuis, December 2017

The slightly more humid location of the Valozières vineyard suited the dry summer conditions has resulted in a wine with striking summer pudding aromas. A very pure Pinot style, lively and open, with a bright drive of fruit on the finish. Aloxe is often overlooked as an appellation, which is a great shame as this example shows what fine quality there is to be found.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 85-87

The 2016 Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Valozières offers up lush blueberry and black cherry scents on the nose with a touch of violet, the 20% new oak nicely integrated. The palate is crisp and fresh on the entry with crunchy tannin and tobacco-tinged black fruit that leads to a rather hard finish that needs to smooth down its rough edges. I certainly think that the 2015 suited this vineyard better. Drink 2019-2025

  • Burghound, April 2018, Score: 89-91

An overtly floral nose combines notes of red and dark currant, earth and a whiff of game. The rich and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess the usual muscle of a fine Valozières while delivering fine if not great depth and length on the mildly rustic and youthfully austere finale. Good quality here. Drink 2023+

  • Decanter, January 2018, Score: 89

An incipiently complex nose of cassis, plum, raw cocoa and spicy soil is followed by a medium-full wine with nice depth and length, and a firm core of savoury fruit framed by fine, chalky tannins. This needs some time to come together and fill out, but should be very good. Drink 2026-2036

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Aloxe Corton

With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses, Aloxe-Corton has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majority of Pinot Noir is planted in thesouthern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from Aloxe-Corton tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
