The single vineyard ‘Montosoli’ displays the true character of this mercurial piece of land. There’s deep powerful core of minerality from the clay soil and altitude and a distinctive tannic structure to the wine, yet this is never overbearing. The bright ripe freshness and vivacity in the wine is highly evident and will surely allow it to develop into a candidate for ‘wine of the vintage’ in 2015. Drink this gem from 2025 onwards.

  • Wine Advocate, March 2020, Score: 96+

Altesino's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli shows those celebrated characteristics of this special vineyard cru that are always portrayed with pronounced mineral intensity, with highlights of crushed granite and pencil shaving. Indeed, Altesino's five-hectare Montosoli vineyard sees a greater concentration of clay schist Galestro rock, and the vineyard altitude (at 350 meters above sea level) adds to the wine's perceived freshness. In this case, those mineral notes are applied with small brush strokes, as the core of the wine is occupied by wild fruit and forest berry. Medicinal herb and rosemary essence appear quietly at the back. This is a very compact and bright wine with young tannins and solid structure. It has all the attributes you look for in a candidate that can withstand long cellar aging. I'd suggest waiting five years or more before popping this cork.

  • James Suckling, March 2020, Score: 96+

A very nuanced but powerful Brunello showing hibiscus, raspberry tea, gunpowder, petrichor, dried orange rind and spearmint. The rows of sharp tannins are very defined and agile, and the acidity is tensely strung up in overtures of vivacious red fruit. A beautiful, nimble Brunello 2015. Drink from 2024.

Altesino is amongst the finest addresses in Montalcino, celebrated for producing wines with striking elegance, power and majesty, the epitome of regal Brunello. Set amongst the north eastern hills of Montalcino the imposing structure of the 15th century Palazzo Altesi overlooks the estate. Built by the Tuscan family Tricerchi, whose marble crest can still be seen set over the old oak entrance door, since 2002 Altesino has been owned by the Gnudi Angelini family. The winery’s outlook combines an essential respect for tradition with a forward-looking perspective, resulting in wine that retains the unique and high quality reputation of Brunello. From an emphasis on traditional methods of agriculture, the careful hand selection of the grapes, to the rose bushes overlooking the rows of vines, Altesino firmly focuses on quality, a principle that governs every aspect of life and work at the estate. Their Brunello is always a wine of drive and energy. Moving to the ‘Montosoli’, this is Altesino’s signature vineyard location. The Montosoli hill is the most enviable vineyard site in Montalcino in which only a handful of growers own vines. The style here reveals a distinctive stony, mineral character and poise that comes from the galestro soil. It is always a wine for the ages and one that will continue to develop well beyond the ‘straight Brunello’.Read less

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
