  • Goedhuis, October 2019

A standout in 2015, the Gorelli’s of Le Pottazine have crafted one of the finest wines that we tasted on our 2019 visits. The aromatics soar from the glass and there is an intense, multidimensional palate of crushed red fruits, wild cut flowers and green herbs. Wonderful freshness complements the finely textured palate. Put simply this has everything that you look for in a 2015 Brunello.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 97

The Le Potazzine 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is immediately bright and energized. The wine is sprightly and lively. This is an elegantly medium-weight wine, but everything is in exactly the right place. Fresh acidity and snappy fruit flavors are followed by lighter touches of rose petal, cardamon, camphor ash and powdered licorice. These aromas are stacked tall and proud. Of special interest is that point of zesty medicinal herb that reminds you of the relatively cool climate and high-altitude positioning of Le Potazzine's vineyards. These special conditions are exactly why this wine performs so nicely in a warm vintage like 2015. The coolness of the growing site offsets the temperatures of the growing season. Some 18,000 bottles will be released in February 2020. Drink 2021-2040

  • James Suckling, September 2019, Score: 93

A refined and fruity red with plums, oyster shell and porcini mushrooms that follow through to a full body. Tight and powerful with gorgeous fruit and richness. Drink after 2022.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2020, Score: 17+

Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Leafy cherry fruit that is still compact and a little closed. Generous sour-cherry fruit and the tannins are persistent but never dominate the fruit. Muscular structure reveals itself even more on the finish, but the whole strikes a near-perfect balance. 2022 – 2032. (WS)

Named after the colourful and sprightly great tits which adorn the Tuscan countryside, Le Potazzine is owned by the dynamic all female team of Gigliola Gianetti and daughters Viola and Sofia. Situated southwest of the town of Montalcino, the estate boasts some of the highest vineyards in the region at 507 metres. This high altitude mitigates any heat damage that may affect plantings at lower levels, while airflow from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west allows the vines to benefit from long warm days and cool evenings. In the winery, sole focus is on achieving harmony and finesse and, ever since the first vinification in 1993, Le Potazzine has been producing wines in the most natural way possible. Natural fermentation, a lengthy maceration process, and ageing in Slavonian oak, means that the wines of Le Potazzine are recognisable in their subtlety and matchless character.Read less

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
