  • Neal Martin, April 2017, Score: 88

The 2015 Bourgogne Pinot Noir, which was bottled in February 2017, has quite a precocious bouquet for a generic Burgundy with ample red berry fruit. The palate is well balanced with succulent blackcurrant and raspberry. It feels stocky and structured towards the finish, a bold generic red Burgundy that should age better than many of its peers. Drink 2018-2024

  • Burghound, Jan 15 2017, Score: 86-89

Reduction presently masks the fruit but there is both good volume and verve to the delicious middle weight flavors that are shaped by firm and mildly rustic tannins on the solidly complex and persistent finish. This is a high quality Bourgogne that is built-to-age at least for the short to medium-term and will need at least a few years. Drink 2020+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 87

Good dark red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, mocha and game. Fat and full of fruit, communicating an almost porty ripeness to its sappy black cherry flavor. A mouthfilling, rather powerful Bourgogne Rouge with noteworthy density and length. Drink 2018 - 2023

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Region

Bourgogne

This blanket regional appellation can apply to wines throughout Burgundy (60% of the area's production) as long as they comply with regulations relating to grape type, yield and alcohol content. Reds and roses are from Pinot Noir or Gamay. Whites are Chardonnay. They are usually the most straightforward of the Burgundy wines, and as a result are the least expensive and the most approachable upon release. In the hands of a more serious producer these can represent exceptional value and quality. The wines are made with the same care and attention to detail as their grander wines. However, they may not qualify for a village or communal appellation because the vines are too young or the vineyard area is outside the appellation boundary.
