The 2014 Vosne Romanée 1Er Cru les Malconsorts has a very cerebral bouquet, beautifully defined and the fruit here is very enmeshed with the oak. There is something more tertiary -- wild woodland, wild mushroom even tincturing the red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, not as powerful as Cathiard's other 2014 Premier Crus, but with the finest precision on the finish. Its persistence is awe-inspiring. • Burghound, January 2017, Score: 95

Interestingly, this is aromatically quite similar to the Reignots but there is an even broader range of spice elements. Otherwise there is first-rate vibrancy to the big, intense, powerful and muscular flavors that are almost pungently mineral. As is usually the case with this wine chez Cathiard it is robust and exceptionally firm yet there is nothing aggressive about the structure on the ripe and hugely long finale; indeed this is notably less youthfully austere than usual. As the description would suggest however it is pointless to open one of these beauties before it has at least 10 years of age. In a word, brilliant. Outstanding. 95/2029+

This is purple and spicy on the nose. Ripe fruit on the attack to a straight and vigorous palate. I like the tension here and the intensity. There is a firm core to the wine and power and density; but nothing heavy, it is athletic and has a pure and straight and vibrant finish. This will gain flesh as it ages…and more exoticism..it has just finished MLF, but looking good.

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
