Chatenière is a superb vineyard, highly esteemed by the older vignerons. A bright and fresh style with striking citrus fruit flavours, this has a natural firmness and structure in the mid-palate and a long complex finish.

  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 89-91

The 2014 Saint Aubin 1er Cru Clos de la Chatenière has a complex bouquet with a very faint, salty sea breeze breaking upon the citrus fruit. It is certainly well defined, stylistically not unlike the Derrière Chez Edouard at the moment. The palate is crisp on the entry, well defined with green apple and kiwi fruit, as well as a keen line of acidity, though perhaps it does not quite possess the same complexity as the Chez Edouard on the finish. • Burghound, June 2016, Score: 90-93

(worked entirely by hand as the vineyard has a 40% slope which ensures that it receives plenty of sun). This is quite firmly reduced though there is excellent tension and punch to the slightly richer and rounder flavors that exhibit a subtle minerality and excellent depth and length on the clean, dry and beautifully balanced finale. This beauty should drink well a bit sooner than the Chez Edouard. This year with the rain - it had an effect…It is full and juicy and this is lifted at the end…Sweet fruit; concentration…sweet juicy lift…it is always very rich and sunny wine - easy to spot, but this year it has a juicy freshness.

Region

Saint Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
