    Les Clos is Chablis’s most prestigious Grand Cru and records show that vines have been planted on this famous site since before 1260. With a shining lime green tinge in the glass, this is initially slightly reserved. It then explodes in the mouth, focusing on a tremendous weight and structure of fruit, with hints of cream and citrus.     This evidences enough wood to notice though it allows the pretty aromas of pear, apple, white flowers and various classic Chablis elements to be appreciated. The seductively textured yet powerful flavors coat the mouth with dry extract on the impressively long, balanced and stony finale where a hint of bitter lemon adds a hint of austerity. Overall this is fantastic and should effortlessly reward longer-term cellaring yet be approachable after only 5 or so years. Drink 2024+

Then rich and complex on the palate if still youthfully backward, showing penetrating flavors of underripe pineapple, menthol, flinty minerality and flowers. Much more massive and less evolved than the 2014 premier crus here but fine-grained and not heavy; really stuffed with material. Boasts terrific energy to carry the fruit and spicy oak on the long, saline back end. Vinous.com

The family team oversee 12 hectares of vineyards, including 2.5 hectares of Les Clos and 4.75 hectares of Mont de Milieu, from which they make extraordinarily fine and classical Chablis. They like to use oak barrels for maturation, although the influence of new oak is only ever a gentle whisper in the background of their steely wines. Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
