  • Goedhuis, December 2014

As the name suggests this cuvée represents five different terroirs in the appellation so is a very classic interpretation of Gevrey Chambertin. Arnaud’s policy of 100% destemming his fruit, makes for a wine of real purity and brightness. With hints of brambles and spice, there is an excellent texture, making it extremely rewarding indeed.

  • Neal Martin, December 2014, Score: 91-93

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs is a blend of fruit hitherto bottled as the Vieilles Vignes and the les Echanges because Arnaud felt that the young vines had come of age and the fruit had reached the same level. Matured in 30% new oak and racked after malolactic at the end of August, it has a well-defined, precise and yet intense bouquet with pure red cherry and wild strawberry scents. There are tangible mineral notes that translate onto the palate defined by taut tannins and a silver thread of acidity. The finish is both poised and linear, completing what is a welcome return for one of Mortet's best cuvées. Drink: 2017 - 2032

  • Burghound, January 2015, Score: 88-91

(from En Motrot, En Derée, Combe de Dessus, Au Vellé and En Champs; 30% new wood). A more complex and very pretty nose features notes of plum, wild red berries, plum, warm earth and plenty of sauvage character. There is fine richness and plenty of underlying tension to the utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that exude evident minerality on the dusty, balanced and solidly persistent finish. This is firm but not hard and should drink well young if desired. Drink 2020+

For many years, Dénis Mortet worked passionately to create one of the most sought after domaines in Burgundy. He learned about winemaking while working with his father Charles, a cousin of Charles Rousseau. From the early 1990s he built his vineyard area to almost 10 hectares dispersed throughout Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vougeot, Fixin and Marsannay. His exceptional determination and self-criticism drove him in pursuit of the holy grail of Gevrey Chambertin. Year-in and year-out, he aimed for higher and higher ideals believing that there was always better, always purer. Sadly, he has not lived to see his results. After his tragic death in 2006 at the age of just 51, his son, Arnaud, took over vineyard management and winemaking. Since then, this domaine has been soaring to ever-greater heights. In Dénis’s era the wines had been admired for their opulence, but in the past decade Arnaud has redefined the Mortet style as one that ascends towards a pinnacle of finesse and elegance. The dextrous handling of each parcel means the Fixin and Marsannay are as interesting talking points as the Lavaux St Jacques and Clos de Vougeot. The domaine has forged a reputation for organic viticulture par excellence, and the dedicated work in the vineyards is abundantly clear in the cellar. Arnaud has an astonishing gift for managing whole bunch fruit and matching new oak to his pure, crystalline wines.Read less

Region

Bourgogne

This blanket regional appellation can apply to wines throughout Burgundy (60% of the area's production) as long as they comply with regulations relating to grape type, yield and alcohol content. Reds and roses are from Pinot Noir or Gamay. Whites are Chardonnay. They are usually the most straightforward of the Burgundy wines, and as a result are the least expensive and the most approachable upon release. In the hands of a more serious producer these can represent exceptional value and quality. The wines are made with the same care and attention to detail as their grander wines. However, they may not qualify for a village or communal appellation because the vines are too young or the vineyard area is outside the appellation boundary.
