  • Neal Martin, December 2013, Score: 89-91

The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes is a maiden release, the 2.2-hectare monopole (of which 0.32-hectares is Chardonnay) bought from the de Montille family on 10 July 2013. The vineyard was already being run under biodynamic tenets so it slotted in neatly with the regimen. It has a precise bouquet, refined and graceful with delicate lime and lemon thyme scents that unfold nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with appreciable balanced and purity. It is quite a complex Nuits Saint Georges Blanc with a taut, mineral-driven finish that has a saline touch of the aftertaste. This is a very fine debut.

  • Burghound, June 2015, Score: 89

Soft wood frames a pungent and ripe nose of ripe yellow-fleshed fruit and white peach that displays nuances of olive oil, straw and roasted nuts. There is remarkably good density to the delicious and lightly mineral-inflected flavors that possess fine depth on the lingering finish. While very forward there is already solid depth and this should make for a lovely effort that can be enjoyed young. Drink 2017+

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
